four-stars

Since the death of his first wife, Godric St. John has devoted his nights to protecting the innocent of London disguised as the notorious Ghost of St Giles. When Lord Griffin Reading discovers Godric's secret double life he presents him with an offer he can't refuse . . . and Godric finds himself married to a young—and pregnant—stranger.
Two years ago Lady Margaret "Megs" Reading lost both her lover and her unborn child—but not before being forced into a marriage of convenience with Godric St. John, an older, dour gentleman she barely knew. No longer content to spend her days at her husband's country estate, Megs leaves for London to get the two things she wants most: to find and bring to justice the man who murdered Roger, her lover, and to have a child of her own. But in order to conceive a baby, she's going to have to seduce the husband she hasn't seen since their marriage breakfast.

Godric and Margaret struggle to accept happiness in their marriage, they appear to reject just the idea to be a couple because of their dead true loves. They think they’re betraying them and their memory in some way, so they (try to) keep their feelings at distance from one another, even when certain bed arrangements are made . . . Boy, how the hot tension hits hard since then! Lots of sexual frustration, very teasing scenes and sex to dream of. Hoyt always succeeds in making us girls blush and grin all the way.

Perhaps some events went too quickly and I admit I might have found this instalment a bit less winning than the others, but I surely did love this book. I was fascinated by learning more about the origins of the Ghost of St Giles and, as usual, the background story and its characters intrigued me so much that I wish I could have the next instalment in my hands already!

  1. I'd personally suggest to start from book one because the "oohh, so the next couple is going to be…" or "What!? It might be that…" running on your mind are priceless during every read!! But yes, these instalments may work as stand-alone, too. As a matter of fact, I started this series from book three (the UK publisher surprised me with that and I couldn't resist the temptation!) and I didn't have any problem with following the plot and be amazed by both story and characters. Elizabeth Hoyt is just SO good! But then of course I found myself so into the Maiden Lane's world that I had to read the previous books as well… Now I devoured all the books in the series so far and I wish I could have the next instalment already!
