Interview with Cameo Renae

Today I’m pleased to welcome debut author Cameo Renae to Darkest Sins!

How would you describe yourself in three words?

Optimist, happy, random.

When did you realize it was the right moment for you to start writing?

When my kids were old enough to take care of themselves. 🙂 I’ve always loved writing. In school, when we had creative writing assignments, I would get totally excited. So… a few years ago, I started a writing course. Then I joined a writing community where I began writing short stories and shared critiques. I had so much wonderful feedback, that I thought I might give a novel a try. It was a terrifying thought at the time, but I’m glad I did it!

In My Dreams is your debut novel. How did you feel after it was published?

I couldn’t have been prouder. I was one of those criers. Yep… tears flowed as I held my paperback in my hands for the first time. I couldn’t believe it. It was just… awesome.

Would you mind telling us how you came up with this story?

In My Dreams sort of wrote itself, but there were a few things that inspired it. First was the passing of my mother-in-law. Second, was the dream I’d had. The dream actually started me writing, and became the first part of Chapter 1. (Of course with extras) After the dream, the whole story, character’s, plot, just – fell into place.

What was your favourite part of writing this book?

Some nights after writing, I couldn’t wait until the next time I could write again. It was such a suspenseful book that I wanted to find out what would happen next.

How would you describe the relationship between Michael and Lizzy?

Their love is the kind of love that anyone would want to have. It’s a real love, a true love. The kind of love that breaks barriers of time and space. They started out as best friends and their love grew from that. That’s awesome.

Is there a scene with them that you particularly love writing? One that moved you deeply?

I’d have to say the ending. The part in the cemetery. I was actually in tears (like sobbing) while writing that part. It tugged at every one of my heart-strings. I’m glad no one was home at the time. They would have thought I was nuts! Ha-ha

I love the slang you used for the bad guy, very appropriate. Was it difficult for you writing with that style or you actually enjoyed it?

I wanted to give the “bad guy” his own voice. Something distinct, so readers would know it was him speaking. I enjoyed writing his slang, because it made me hate him even more.

I know you love anything about Paranormal. Is there any creature in particular that you love the most?

Oh yes… Growing up my VERY favourite creature was the Unicorn. I used to have stuffed animals, posters, and would draw pictures of them all the time. They are the most beautiful, magical creatures. I still want one. I know they’re out there… somewhere!

You finished writing a new novel, the first in a YA Paranormal trilogy. Can you tell us anything about it?

Hmmm… without giving too much away. It is definitely another suspense novel, but this one has a LOT more action. In My Dreams’ had Guardians… and I loved the idea SO much that I carried them into this new novel. But they are TOTALLY different. There are six Guardians in this new novel, all gorgeous, all kick-a$$ (Sorry if I offended anyone. Those are money signs!), all trying to save one girl. There’s a lot behind it, but I don’t want to give too much away! I’m totally EXCITED!

Cameo RenaeGrowing up with a love of reading great love stories and anything about paranormal, Cameo Renae says to be happier when she’s writing. She lives in Maui, Hawaii where encouraged and supported by her husband and their two children (now teenagers), Cameo started writing In My Dreams, her first novel.

And now a little surprise for you all . . . Cameo Renae is giving away 2 e-books (any format can be chosen). All you have to do is comment on this post telling us what’s in your dreams! At the end of the week Cameo will choose the two most original answers and give them the prizes!! Ready? Let’s find out what you’re dreaming about then! 😉

  1. Me, too!! And believe me, it was a total pleasure interviewing you! ♥ xo

*Since I already have my copy of the book (with a lovely dedication ♥) I'm gonna give others the chance to win but let me just say that in my dreams there is a full fantasy world that one day I hope to put on paper… ;)*

  2. This was a really lovely interview!! Well… What's in my dreams? Besides random dreams connected to everyday life (last night, for example, I dreamt that I was still in school and it was exams period and Jared Padalecki was one of my friends. He had a girlfriend but we were having an affair… I give it to the fact that I watched an episode of Gilmore Girls, when him cheating on his wife was in the air… :P) I dream of finding the money to fund my start-up business.

  3. Dreams, huh? Well it's changed over the years. I started out wanting to be a writer. I wanted to write for TIme magazine. Then I grew up and life happened. I wanted to be a math teacher. I managed that one but the writing bug never really went away. Now I read like crazy and have my own blog. I guess what I want now is to write my own novel! Not very original but there you go.

  4. Great interview, guys! And thanks so much for the giveaway! I'd love to win a copy of Renae's book – it sounds really interesting!

My dreams have changed loads over the past few years, too. I used to dream of becoming a marine biologist or an animal conservationist, until I finally realised that science is definitely not my thing! Lol! Now, though, they're a bit more 'realistic' for my personality and smarts. When I've finished my degree, I want to become an editor – particularly a book editor… and above all I want to move to Australia permanently to be nearer to some of my family. :-))

  5. I'm jealous of anyone who can write so easily. It's always such a darn chore for me. One of my favourite horror writers, TED Klein, had terrible writer's block, so it's not necessarily a sign that you shouldn't be writing.
Also, I'm impressed that she got a good start so late in life. Very inspiring.

  6. Great interview! Congrats on the debut novel. It sounds great!

Dreams, huh? My husband laughs at me when I tell him my dreams. 😮

Well, there is one that was so terrifying, I've remembered it for years.

In my dream I was simultaneously above myself and in my body lying on the bed (it was like I was two people at once). I could feel a beastie behind me, watching me. I knew it wanted to get me when suddenly it crawled up onto the bed and grabbed me by my shoulders to drag me off. I woke up immediately with the feeling of its hands still on my shoulders.

    Very terrifying.

  7. For some reason I think this question is really hard! It really shouldn't be to know your dreams right?

Right now, I guess my dream is to finally get well and free from certain issues that came up around three years ago. I'd like to be able to live life to the fullest like those around me, without panicking over small things. And especially I'd like to get passed that, in order to work in a library to be among books and other book loving people, since books are my passion and something I would love to be surrounded with both at home and at work. And what's better than sharing it with more book-lovers?

That's my absolute number one dream! Well, it leads to plenty, but the main reasons. Great interview and giveaway. Thank you so much for offering it, Cameo!

  8. Okay… So today is the day where I choose the 2 winners. I've read through all of the choices, and it's too hard to choose! I don't like choosing. So, because it's October (the month of trick-or-treating), I'm going to TREAT everyone that entered to a copy of In My Dreams! Happy early Halloween! 😀
