MILSA LORIS
She raised the dagger. Slash. In one lethal swoop, the blade stuck fast in the little frog’s heart. It made no sound. The witch crunched the rat’s neck in her other hand and released the dead rodent onto the grassy floor. She picked up her other prey and with a couple of talented flicks of the knife, removed both its beady, black eyes.
Torhir swallowed with disgust, and finally the witch acknowledged his presence.
“Had to stab the little fella first,” Noraleen said. “Couldn’t pluck out his eyes with ‘im alive now, could I? Twouldn’t be right.” She bent, retrieving her rat, then straightening again, she smiled at him with a few yellowed, crooked teeth.
“Get you inside now, boy. The feast awaits, and some fair child waits too.”
“Some fair child?” Torhir repeated with uncertainty.
“From times gone by, ye know one another. Your father wants her people taken away tonight.”
“The King’s daughter? How did you?” he sputtered.
“I got eyes, boy,” she croaked. “In you must go and stay awhile. World outside gone crazy, you know.”
Torhir decided to obey her. He would go in, if only to escape her knowing eyes.
Noraleen looked at her quarry, satisfied. She smiled after the young man, so proud, so fine. “Stay awhile,” she whispered and cackled.
