After surviving the Napoleonic Wars, Sir Benedict Harper is struggling to move on, his body and spirit in need of a healing touch. Never does Ben imagine that hope will come in the form of a beautiful woman who has seen her own share of suffering. After the lingering death of her husband, Samantha McKay is at the mercy of her oppressive in-lawsโ€”until she plots an escape to distant Wales to claim a house she has inherited. Being a gentleman, Ben insists that he escort her on the fateful journey.
Ben wants Samantha as much as she wants him, but he is cautious. What can a wounded soul offer any woman? Samantha is ready to go where fate takes her, to leave behind polite society and even propriety in her desire for this handsome, honorable soldier. But dare she offer her bruised heart as well as her body? The answers to both their questions may be found in an unlikely place: in each other's arms.

What a perfect escape! I keep devouring Balogh’s The Survivors’ Club series book after book and it’s clear by now that I will always find a special attachment to every character.

Ben and Samantha are two wounded souls but make no mistake, they’re not weak and most certainly they’re not the whining type. They have uncertainties and insecurities caused by different reasons/events, but they both fight to reach happiness at its fullest. Problem is, they may have two different paths to take in order to get that, but for now they’re on the same road and their journey is definitely one full of surprises . . . There’s a touching tenderness and an attraction that entices the reader from beginning to end, appreciated even more because of a beautiful, genuine relationship development. This gives both story and characters a great strength and makes you love reading how Ben and Samantha try to find their place in the world even more.

I love Mary Balogh’s writing, feeling the emotions every character feels is guaranteed every time, as sure as being drawn into a lovely read. Needless to say, I totally recommend this and each of The Survivors’ Club instalments.

You ARE determined to have me read an HR, aren't you, Silvia?!? I've not read Balogh before but I'm very interested in The Escape. I love reading broken characters and it seems as though Ben and Samantha are great characters, if a little broken. I'll have to give this series a try when my schedule allows. ๐Ÿ™‚

I've been away on vacation – thus my absence from commenting. I'm trying to get caught up but it may take me a few days. ๐Ÿ™‚ Hope you've had a lovely Tuesday!

  2. I love Balogh and I have this one but haven't started it yet. I tried it a few weeks ago but I don't think I was in the right mood for it and have kind of hesitated about picking it back up. Sounds like I need to get over that! Great review!

  3. I am VERY determined, Brandee. As a matter of fact, I'm reading even more HR than usual just to tease you more! ๐Ÿ˜‰ I love this genre and I really love reading about broken characters and, since you and I are on the same page, I would suggest this series because it has all characters like that. And I loved each and everyone of them so far ๐Ÿ™‚

Welcome back from your vacation, and thanks for taking the time to stop by <3

  4. It really is, isn't it? I must admit, I LOVE that dress! Mary Balogh has a lovely writing style and I'm glad to hear you enjoyed one of her novellas. You should definitely try a full-length novel, Anna. It's simply a pleasure reading about her characters ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Another Balogh's lover, YES! I blame that to the mood, Katherine…It happens to me, too, and with different genres. If I'm not up for it in that precise moment, then better put the book down before I regret it and end up disliking something that, in another moment, I would have really loved. Hope you'll have a great time with this instalment ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. YAY, HR for the win! I haven't read any Balogh yet, but her books will be added to my TBR right after I post this comment! I have read some awesome HR myself lately, and I'm in the mood for more ๐Ÿ™‚ Great review!
