SUMMARY
Emerald St. John is in trouble. She has been condemned to marry a man she hates, her enemies are conspiring to have her pet bear torn apart in the baiting pits, and the man she loves is far away on the high seas. And now she has stumbled into a web of spies with a plot to poison Queen Elizabeth I. To save herself and the kingdom, Emerald must beat the spies at her own game—which means transforming herself from a country girl into a lady of the court. Can she do it in time?

MY REVIEW

I bought this book a few years ago, but it seemed like I could never bring myself to read it. A new year started and I thought it was time to give it a go, but unfortunately I realised my intuition wasn’t wrong…

The blurb was what sold the book to me in the first place, I thought there would be an intriguing plot to follow with fascinating discoveries to make and, why not, some good action to keep me entertained. Truth to be told, the story was there but I’m afraid I didn’t find the the structure very strong, and neither were the characters. Emerald changes her mind on people way too easily, there is a lot of wrong made by more than one person here and yet that doesn’t affect her as it should. Also, the love is really too instant and not believable, and the real action takes place just in the last few pages of the book, which leaves most of the read a bit flat.

I wish I could say I liked it, but I’m honestly disappointed. However, it happens to every reader that, even in the genres they love the most, a read doesn’t work for them. Unfortunately this one has been like that for me.
