Life of a Blogger: Languages

Posted September 19, 2014 by Silvia in Life of a Blogger / 14 Comments

Life of a Blogger is a weekly feature hosted by Jessi @ Novel Heartbeat.
Let’s talk about non-bookish topics, so we get to know each other on a more personal level.

This week’s topic: LANGUAGES

Well, considering I’m ITALIAN, it’s pretty easy to guess which language I speak waaaay too fluently, huh? ๐Ÿ˜‰ Besides that, I clearly know ENGLISH, which it has become my second language since I moved to UK.

Other than those two primary languages, let’s see . . . I studied GERMAN for three years in junior high school and I still remember some of the basics, but that is not enough for me to engage in a conversation or following one properly. I also took a couple of SPANISH classes at Uni, but I didn’t keep up with it afterwards. I may not speak it, but I do understand it and I think it’s mostly because it is similar to my mother tongue.

Speaking of studies, I come from a classical high school so, among those languages I know, I can add LATIN and GREEK, which I can still manage to make some translations from.

  1. LOL you're even better than me. I would say English is ok but I'm not fluent at speaking. I don't speak that much but I'm ok. I'm perfect at French (wonder why lol). I used to love spanish and well I'm near Spain so it helps too. I studied it during many years, like latin.

  2. Verra nice. I have Spanish (took 7 years in school up to AP Lit then passed my AP exam and promptly refused to ever speak it again lol) and then German a year in high school and a couple in college. I can read both better than speak them at this point–It's been 14ish years.

  3. Well, I suppose it's because you tend to write it for the most part. Living in UK, I have to speak English every time I go outside, so I'd say it's basically a matter of practice. ๐Ÿ˜‰
Would you believe I've always considered French too complicated? After all those languages I mentioned it sounds 'silly', huh? And yet, French kinda scares me… Kudos for you!!

That's wonderful you have knowledge of or can speak so many languages, Silvia. I took Spanish in school beginning in first grade and minored in it in college. But I'm nowhere near fluent since you tend to lose it if you don't use it. ๐Ÿ™‚ My kids are studying Spanish though so I get to practice with them.

You know very well I don't like German.
I studied Latin for a couple of years at that language school, but it just wasn't for me. ๐Ÿ˜›

  6. Wowweee.. I tried to learn some phrases in Italian when I entered a competition to win a trip to Italy to watch the Italian Grand Prix – sadly I did not win but it was fun. I speak English as my first language and Afrikaans as a second ๐Ÿ™‚

Another silly thing I did in high school was switch my cellphone language to Italian – so that no one could snoop on my phone *ha ha* loved it!
