Wendy Everly knew she was different the day her mother tried to kill her and accused her of having been switched at birth. Although certain she's not the monster her mother claimed she is, she does feel that she doesn't quite fit in. The new girl in High School, Wendy is bored and frustrated by her small-town life—and then there's her secret, her mysterious ability—she can influence people's decisions, without knowing how, or why . . . When the intense and darkly handsome newcomer Finn suddenly turns up at her bedroom window one night, her world is turned upside down. He holds the key to her past, the answers to her strange powers and is the doorway to a place she never imagined could exist: Forening, the home of the Trylle. Among the Trylle she is not just different, but special. But what marks her out as chosen for greatness in this world also places her in grave danger. With everything around her changing, Finn is the only person she can trust. But dark forces are conspiring—not only to separate them, but to see the downfall of everything that Wendy cares about . . .
Switched was one of those interesting books I kept seeing around but, for some reason, I never bought it . . . Thanks to the publisher who kindly sent me a review copy, I finally read it. Was it like I expected it to be? Absolutely not, it was even better!
Wendy had a traumatic childhood and she always brings with her every single scar of that in her life. Thanks to such a difficult childhood, though, Wendy forged a strong personality. She doesn’t like people who tell her what she has to do or how she has to do it. But, when she finds herself in the Trylle society, she needs to face the fact that it is practically impossible not to follow certain rules, and some of them are really hard to digest . . . It’s a kind of life that I couldn’t stand, especially because Elora is in it. Surely her character is the one who brings all the difficulties that make the reading more interesting, still, she’s terrible. I can’t say the same thing about the boys, of course . . . Oh, boys!
The magical Trylle world is very creative. With powerful abilities, a forbidden love and the bonus short story at the end of the book—showing a different and definitely darker point of view—I was hooked. An entertaining first instalment of what sounds like an interesting, original trilogy!
Great review
You have the lovely pink cover, mine is orange.
The next book is even better than Switched and as soon as Ascend is out by me I am getting a copy as I NEED to find out what happens next 😀
I'm seeing this book everywhere online. I haven't read a Hocking book yet so might start with this one. Thanks for the review Syliva.
I'll have to try this one again. I purchased it when she was still self-publishing and I just couldn't get past some things. I'm sure those issues aren't even present anymore. Great review, Silvia!! You have piqued my interest. 😀
I'm glad to hear that, Emily! 🙂
