Whatever you do, fight.
Sophia's family has skeletons, but they aren't in their graves.
At twenty-two, practicing Wiccan Sophia Parsons is scratching out a living waiting tables in her Rocky Mountain hometown, a pariah after a string of unsolved murders with only one thing in common: her.
Sophia can imagine lots of ways to improve her life, but she'd settle for just getting rid of the buzzing noise in her head. When the spell she casts goes wrong, the static turns into voices. Her personal demons get company, and the newcomers are dangerous.
One of them is a man named Charles, who Sophia falls for despite her better judgment. He has connections that might help her unveil the mystery surrounding her ancestor's hanging, but she gets more than she bargains for when she finally decides to trust him.
Survival in his world, she learns, means not asking questions and staying out of the immortal council's way. It's a line she crossed long ago. If Sophia wants to survive the council and save the people she loves, she must accept who she is, perform dark magic, and fight to the death for her freedom.
Most of the times some events become clear to me at some point during the reading, and that’s why unfortunately the element of surprise loses its effect on me. Now, imagine my deep joy to discover myself totally surprised from the beginning to the end with this book! Seriously, I think it’s practically impossible to guess anything and the very amazing thing is that there is not one time in which you can say “I would have preferred another explanation”.
The vampire-like creatures here have nothing to do with the ones we usually read about. Their special supernatural powers are surely fascinating, but their origins are what really capture you and leave you stunned with the charming explanation behind. Of course, the great care for every detail makes you love everything even more.
The whole story is simply beautiful and one of the strongest keys of this beauty is that YA meets finally Adult. This book is a perfect example of how the two genres can be mixed together and the author did an amazing job balancing them. Do you think all the flirting moments with a high sexual tension are great but an outstanding sex scene wouldn’t be so wrong in the matter? Welcome to Rebecca Hamilton’s world, where sex is a natural course of a young couple in love and a sex scene can be so-passionately-OMG-good. But if you think that’s all you have to expect from Charles and Sophia, then you’re seriously wrong. You should also prepare yourself for moments where you can’t control yourself and start laughing all of a sudden. Indeed, those two are a real pleasure to read about also thanks to their fun—sarcastic sometimes—flirting attitude.
The Forever Girl is a stunning first instalment of a series I can’t wait to know more about! Rebecca Hamilton, I love your story, your writing style is gorgeous and I think you’re definitely one of the best new authors of 2012!
