I’ve been obsessed with Rafe Mason since I was thirteen. The twisted part of this story is that I still want him, even now. Now that he’s holding me captive on an island. Rafe has his reasons for doing what he’s doing, and if I’m honest, I can’t blame him. I’m the girl who sent him to prison for a heinous crime he didn’t commit. But now he’s free and the tables have turned . . . now he’s the one driven by obsession.
Torrent is a dark book, not darker than the ones I’m used to, but it surely has to be classified as a dark romance. How else would you describe a book in which there are twisted (and I mean really twisted) characters/relationships? And if you’re a lover of the genre, you know this is the charm of such stories.
I think we all—or at least most of us—agree that the plot is fundamental, and I was pleased to find a good one in here. Nevertheless, I honestly thought that something was off at the beginning, even though I couldn’t immediately place what it was. Thankfully the read flew well, but at some point that initial feeling came back and I started to realize that my issue was mostly with the characters. I couldn’t completely feel involved with them, although Rafe’s charisma didn’t go unnoticed. Still, it’s one of the minor characters who got me quite intrigued. I really wouldn’t mind finding out more about Jax, and I do hope the author will put him more under the spotlight.
I read the book in just one sitting and, although I would have appreciated seeing some events developed more than others, I’m curious enough to see where Gemma James decides to take the reader. The end of this first instalment certainly makes you wonder . . .
You have me curious Silvia, I like dark. I am often intrigued by secondary characters like Jax and hopefully the next book will share more. Sorry this was a tad off. I will be watching for reviews of book two.
Thanks for reading and reviewing, Silvia! Jax might get his own story some day. 😉
I really loved this book and gave it 5/5 stars. I loved that we jumped right in and the back-story developed with the book. It was a refreshing change of pace for me. I like seeing we both took something different from this book. I too, am looking forward to the next book(s).
I'm really counting on Jax's character development, it should be really interesting.
That makes me happy, I would be really curious to get to know his story properly 🙂
It's not the pace that bothered me, but I would have preferred more story development instead of having some sex scenes going on over and over. There are things I'm sure the author will explain better in the next instalments, but in my opinion it would have been helpful to expand a couple of concepts a bit more. Nevertheless, I'm glad you loved the book, Karen.
Yeah, definitely dark, Silvia! I didn't feel too involved in the characters, either, and it was actually a little too dark for me 🙂 I'm glad you enjoyed it and look forward to the next story in this series! The cliffhanger was amazing.
I'm honestly used to darker stories, so this one wasn't too much for me but I did have some 'involvement' issues and I get what you mean. I'm sorry it didn't work out well for you, but glad to hear you at least enjoyed the cliffhanger 🙂
Hmm, the lack of connection with the characters is definitely a stumbling block, Silvia. I'm glad you liked Torrent overall though. I'm anxious and nervous to get started on it.
I'm sorry I made you feel nervous, Brandee…If it can be of any consolation, there are different opinions on these characters. They're not all negative, you'd be surprise to see how many seemed to really have loved both main characters and got a strong connection with them. So, fingers crossed it works great for you! 🙂
Oh hard when you aren't quite connected with the main characters. Sounds like an interesting one though. I do love those dark and twisty ones.
If you ever decide to go for it, I'll be curious to know your thoughts, Anna.
I like dark but am reluctant about the lack of connection, so… I'll wait until you read the next one and review it 🙂
Apparently the connection works well for a few and less for others. So, who knows, you may be with the first part…
