Payne, twin sister of the Vishous, is cut from the same dark, seductive cloth as her vampire brother. Imprisoned for eons by their mother, the Scribe Virgin, she finally frees herself—only to face a devastating injury.
Manuel Manello, MD, is drafted by the Brotherhood to save her as only he can—but when the human surgeon and the vampire warrior meet, their two worlds collide in the face of their undeniable passion. With so much working against them, can love prove stronger than the birthright and the biology that separate them?
I found Payne very different from what I expected her to be. I always pictured her like a warrior, kick-ass heroine (Xhex style), but apparently she ended having more ‘Chosen’ characteristics and this put me down a bit. Then, she and Manny are a totally likeable couple and Manuel Manello is an amazing hero! Kind of a revelation to be honest, in fact, even if I liked him, I’d never have said I would have find him so irresistible . . .
Of course, Payne/Manny’s story is the main one, but there’s also another plot that particularly catches the reader’s attention . . . V’s devastating past keeps tormenting him and it’s ruining the only happiness he ever had in his entire existence. Wait, what if that happiness was just an illusion? Surely Jane is the love of his life, but did she set him free? Or does V need to properly deal with his past to reach his own freedom and really start living is life? And if so, who can help him if not Butch? I can’t stop being amazed and deeply touched by this bromance!
A new great hero, more V and the refreshing introduction of the captivating Band of Bastards. Are they totally bad guys? J.R. Ward surely can’t stop making us wonder and wait with excitement for the next instalment!
